Study finds fishing activity rose in most marine protected areas worldwide
A new study published Wednesday in Science Advances reports that industrial fishing increased in the majority of marine reserves globally between 2012 and 2024.

Fishing pressure increases globally
Researchers analyzed vessel-tracking data from Global Fishing Watch against maps of protected zones. The analysis covered 861 areas around the world over a twelve-year period. Results showed that fishing activity grew in 58 percent of these locations.
Few zones remain fully closed
Only a small number of reserves maintain strict bans on all fishing operations. Industrial vessels continue to operate within most designated conservation areas despite international pledges. This trend persists even as nations aim to protect 30 percent of oceans by 2030.
