Parallax collects as little as it can. This page says exactly what that means, in plain terms, and it describes the site as it is today rather than as it might one day be.
What we collect
Nothing you type, because there is nothing to type. The site has no accounts, no login, no newsletter, no comments and no forms. We never ask for your name, email address or any other personal detail, so we do not hold them.
Server logs. Like any web server, ours records each request: the page asked for, the time, your browser’s user-agent string, and the IP address the request came from. These are used to keep the site running and to investigate abuse. They are not used to build a profile of you, are not linked to anything else, and are not sold or shared.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics to count visits and see which stories people read. It tells us how many readers arrived, roughly where in the world from, which pages they opened and how they found us. It does not tell us who you are, and we never combine it with anything else.
To do that it sets cookies in your browser and sends Google your IP address, the page you are on and the page you came from. Google acts as our data processor for this and holds the data under its own terms.
What we have switched off: Google Signals, which is the feature that would let Google tie your visit here to a signed-in Google profile across other sites for advertising. We do not use it and we do not want it.
Analytics does not run for anyone signed in to administer the site, and it did not run at all before the site opened to search engines.
Other cookies
There is no Facebook pixel, no advertising tracker and no third-party script watching what you read beyond the analytics described above.
Your browser may store a small preference locally, such as light or dark mode. That never leaves your device and we cannot read it.
If you sign in to administer the site, WordPress sets session cookies. That applies to staff, not readers.
Opting out
If you would rather not be counted:
- Turn on your browser’s tracking protection, or block cookies for this site. Everything here works without them.
- Install Google’s own opt-out add-on, which stops Analytics on every site, not just this one.
- Use a private or incognito window, which discards the cookies when you close it.
Things loaded from elsewhere
Some parts of a page come from other services, and those services will see your IP address as a consequence of your browser fetching them:
- Web fonts from Google Fonts.
- Photographs are copied to our own server rather than hot-linked, so viewing a story does not report you to the outlet it came from.
- Links to sources are ordinary links. Once you follow one you are on that outlet’s site, under their privacy policy, not ours.
Advertising
This site carries no advertising and loads no advertising code, so no ad network receives anything about your visit. If that changes, this page will say so before it does, and will name the network and what it collects.
How long anything is kept
Server logs are rotated and deleted on a short cycle. The text of source articles we read is deleted on a retention timer once it has served its purpose. It is working material rather than an archive.
Children
The site is not directed at children and collects no information from anybody, including them.
Your rights
We hold no account for you and nothing that names you. What exists is transient server logs and aggregate analytics, neither of which we can trace to a person. If you believe we hold something about you, write to editor@parallax.news and we will tell you what there is and remove it where we can.
Nothing is stored on your device until you choose. The notice that appears on your first visit sets analytics to denied by default, and only your agreement changes that. Decline and no analytics cookie is ever written, which we have tested rather than assumed.
