Parallax is a news site that reads a story across many newsrooms at once and shows you what they agree on, where their accounts part company, and who is carrying it.
Why “Parallax”
Parallax is the apparent shift in an object’s position when you look at it from two different places. Astronomers use exactly that shift to work out how far away something really is. You cannot fix the true position of anything from a single viewpoint.
That is the method here. One report tells you what one newsroom saw. Several reports, held side by side, locate the story more accurately than any of them manages alone, and the places where they disagree are information rather than noise.
What we publish
Every news story on this site is a short, neutral summary of coverage published elsewhere, with each source named and linked. We do not send reporters anywhere and we do not claim to. The original reporting belongs to the outlets we link to, and the point of the summary is to get you to them faster and better informed.
Two things on the site are ours. Editorial carries analysis written by a person, under their name. And the comparison between sources, covering the figures that differ and the detail one outlet has that another does not, is work no single newsroom produces, because no newsroom reads its competitors this way.
What we do not do
- We do not adjudicate. Where outlets report different figures we show both and name who said what. We do not tell you which is right.
- We do not rewrite to a line. Summaries are held to what the sources actually said; anything a summary asserts that no source supports is rejected before publication.
- We do not republish articles. A summary is a few sentences and a set of links. If you want the story, read the outlet that reported it.
How it is made
Feeds from every outlet we read are monitored continuously, reports of the same event are grouped together, and each summary is written from those reports and checked against them before it publishes. Sensitive subjects are reviewed before they appear. The methodology page sets out every step, including the checks that stop a story.
Who we read
Every outlet below is read continuously, and every one of them is named on the stories it contributes to, with a link to the original report. The list is built from what the site is actually reading, so it cannot fall out of date.
