Appeal court extends life sentence for Henry Nowak killer to 25 years
The Court of Appeal in London increased the minimum prison term for Vickrum Digwa from 21 to 25 years on Thursday.
Original sentence deemed too low
The three-judge panel ruled that the initial life sentence with a 21-year minimum was unduly lenient. Attorney General Ellie Reeves successfully argued for the increase after Digwa stabbed Henry Nowak in Southampton last December.
Aggravating factors highlighted by judges
Lady Chief Justice Carr noted that the use of a large dagger and subsequent obstruction of justice made the crime particularly serious. The court also considered Digwa's false claims of racial abuse which led to his victim being handcuffed while dying.
Related convictions and public impact
Digwa's mother Kiran Kaur received a three-year jail term for attempting to hide the ceremonial knife used in the attack. The case sparked violent demonstrations across Southampton following the initial sentencing decision.
