Ocean circulation persists after North Atlantic Deep Water formation stops in models
Researchers published new findings in AGU Advances showing that cross-hemispheric ocean overturning can continue for centuries even if North Atlantic Deep Water formation shuts down.

Model results show continued transport
A study using the Community Earth System Model 2 simulated a scenario where carbon dioxide levels quadrupled. The simulation indicated that North Atlantic Deep Water formation would stop completely while cross-hemispheric overturning transport slowed only gradually. This outcome appeared in both the full coupled model and an idealized reduced-gravity ocean model.
Mechanism involves density layer changes
The authors state that this continued circulation is powered by a gradual deepening of density layers instead of a steady balance of sinking and rising water. This rearrangement of the ocean stratification allows the system to remain active for centuries despite the shutdown of one key component.
