Engineer shares knowledge of machinery

Clawson describes his locomotive Black Betty as a living machine with its own personality. The 24-year-old operator has worked this route alongside his grandfather and great-grandfather.

Train travels along river path

The diesel-electric unit moves through the gorge while the engineer provides commentary on local history. Millions of years ago, rising Rockies allowed the Arkansas River to carve a deep channel.

Geology creates narrow chasm

Water wearing away granite formed a V-shaped gorge that reaches depths of 1,250 feet in places. Visitors can view this geological feature from above or below the tracks.
