Researchers create bio-based coating with fire protection and recycling features

Scientists from IMDEA Materials, the Technical University of Madrid, Peking University and China Jiliang University developed a new epoxy-based coating that offers fire safety, early warning and upcycling capabilities.

New multifunctional material system

The team engineered an epoxy-based coating using phytic acid and graphene oxide. This system shields materials from extreme heat while also alerting users to fire risks early. At the end of its life, the material can be recycled into new flame-retardant products.

Published research findings

The study appears in the journal Polymer Degradation and Stability. It shows how one material can handle three distinct functions instead of just delaying heat transfer. This approach integrates fire safety, sustainability and circularity into a single product.
