Study finds hand orientation controls spin on elite volleyball jump serves

Researchers used motion capture to measure how female collegiate athletes control ball spin during three types of jump serves in a laboratory.

Serve types show distinct spin patterns

The study compared jump float, jump drive, and jump hybrid serves executed by a player on the Japanese national team. Both the drive and hybrid versions produced significantly more topspin than the float serve. The hybrid serve generated much higher lateral spin compared to the other two types.

Hand tilt links directly to ball rotation

Data collected from high-speed three-dimensional motion capture systems revealed clear correlations between hand position and ball movement. A greater forward tilt of the palm at impact resulted in specific spin characteristics for each serve type. These findings offer new scientific insight into how elite players manipulate offensive skills.
