Study finds Black characters rated with similar precision regardless of nerdy or chill appearance
Linguistics professor Florian Schwarz and researcher Andrea Beltrama studied how people interpret speech precision from cartoon characters in a recent study.
Research team created distinct character designs
The researchers designed two specific cartoon figures to test social perceptions. One character wore glasses and a sweater while assuming a guarded stance. The other figure wore a T-shirt and jeans while smiling with a relaxed posture.
Participants evaluated flight price responses
Subjects were asked simple questions like the cost of a plane ticket to determine their interpretation of answers. They judged whether a specific dollar amount was exact or rounded based on the speaker's persona. The study examined if these judgments changed when the speaker appeared nerdy versus chill.
Results showed consistent precision ratings
Black characters received similar precision ratings whether they looked nerdy or chill according to the findings. People often assume figures have been rounded based on their perception of the person giving the answer. Previous research noted that high precision speech can make a speaker seem intelligent but also pedantic.
