University of Bath and Goethe University Frankfurt researchers validate digital detox scale
Researchers from the University of Bath and Goethe University Frankfurt have developed a new validated scale to measure attitudes toward temporarily reducing digital consumption.
Study measures willingness to disconnect
The new tool assesses how positively people view the prospect of switching off from screens. More than eight in 10 participants expressed a positive attitude toward the idea of a digital detox. The study notes that these findings suggest a widespread appetite for reducing screen time, though it did not test if participants actually followed through.
Attitudes link to self-control traits
Published in Psychology & Marketing, the research found that views on digital detox are associated with characteristics like mindfulness and self-control. These attitudes could also help predict how much time individuals spend watching online videos later. The findings offer a new way to investigate the complex relationship between people and digital technology.
