Researchers turn plastic bags and bottles into industrial adhesives

A research team has developed a new method to convert waste polyolefins like plastic bags and bottles into high-performance adhesives.

Current recycling limitations for polyolefins

Most of the world's 450 million metric tons of annual plastic production ends up in landfills or incinerators. Melting down these materials causes quality loss and limits their use to low-grade applications like plant pots.

New chemical approach avoids heat

Scientists found that polyolefins lack oxygen atoms needed for standard cleavage reactions, making pyrolysis the only previous option. The new process selectively breaks these materials down without using high-energy heating to rebuild monomers.

Resulting material quality improves

This technique prevents dark discoloration from waste dyes that usually ruin recycled plastic products. The output is now suitable for industrial-strength adhesive applications rather than just paving slabs.
