Punjab grants illiterate prisoners 30-day sentence remission after passing literacy exam
The Punjab government approved a special 30-day sentence remission for convicted illiterate prisoners who complete an approved literacy programme in jails across the province.

New rules amend prison regulations
The Punjab Home Department issued a notification amending the Pakistan Prisons Rules, 1978. This amendment allows the superintendent of jail to grant special remission upon receipt of a proficiency certificate. The certificate is issued by the Literacy and Non-Formal Basic Education Department after verifying basic reading, writing, and numeracy skills.
Programme statistics show progress
The Chief Minister Punjab Prisoners Literacy Programme has been active since May 2026. A total of 19,578 prisoners have received education so far, with 4,088 released and 11,317 passing the literacy examination. Currently, 4,173 inmates are enrolled at 182 literacy centres located in 43 prisons across Punjab.
