Researchers at IISc develop light technique to fix cell division
Scientists at the Indian Institute of Science have created a method called LISA that uses blue light to activate enzymes needed for cell division.
New method activates spindle assembly
Researchers at the Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology developed Light-Induced Spindle Activation to study centrosomes. This technique reversibly activates Aurora A kinase, a key enzyme critical for assembling mitotic spindles. The process allows scientists to manipulate components when cell division fails.
Study published in EMBO Reports
The study was published in the journal EMBO Reports after testing the method on frog egg extracts. Previous work showed that Cep192 is required for Aurora A activation in these settings. LISA enables scientists to induce clustering using blue light without relying on Cep192.
