New book shows young Isaac Newton was social and curious
Caltech historians Jed Buchwald and Mordechai Feingold published a new book on the early life of Isaac Newton on Sept. 29.
Early career portrait changes
The authors used digitized scans of Newton's writings to study his life before 1687. They found he was not always the solitary figure history remembers. Instead, the records show a scholar who enjoyed social interaction and had many fleeting interests.

The book titled The Winding Trail to Newton's Principia Mathematica is available from Princeton University Press. It challenges standard accounts that describe him as obsessed with power and deeply egotistical. This new perspective suggests he was a universal scholar even though he lacked grounding in many things.
