Italian researchers create dopamine nanotubes combining heat and electricity
A team at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia in Pontedera has developed organic nanoparticles that combine heat, electrical stimulation, and antioxidant release.

New material combines three functions
The research group led by Gianni Ciofani produced these structures for the first time. They measure 500 nanometers and possess piezoelectric, photothermal, and antioxidant properties simultaneously. This development appears in the international journal ACS Nano.
Activation methods include light and sound
Scientists can heat the particles using infrared light or trigger electrical stimulation with ultrasound. The material also releases antioxidant substances when activated by these external inputs. These capabilities allow for precise control over cellular activity in medical settings.
Potential uses target specific diseases
The study aims to provide nanomedicine with a versatile therapeutic tool for oncology. Researchers also see potential applications in treating neurodegenerative conditions. The project operates under the Technologies for Healthy Living flagship program.
