Eight million year old rhino skull found in Crete
Scientists discovered an eight-million-year-old rhinoceros skull in Sitia on the Greek island of Crete.
Ancient fossil identified by researchers
The specimen belongs to the species Dihoplus pikermiensis and dates between 8 million and 8.5 million years ago. This massive two-horned rhinoceros was part of the Pikermian fauna that lived in western Eurasia during the late Miocene period.
Discovery location details
Paleontological teams uncovered the fossilized bones during research conducted last March. The excavation took place specifically within the Magantze and Trapeza areas of Sitia Geopark, a site recognized by UNESCO.
Preserved features under study
Researchers are currently examining three intact molars from the upper left jaw. These teeth provide insights into the animal's diet and age according to Greek media reports.
