Wonderwall Designs Forest Retreat for Not A Hotel Kitakaruizawa
Masamichi Katayama-led Wonderwall has unveiled a new forest retreat called MASU at the Not A Hotel Kitakaruizawa.

Design Concept and Architecture
The villa is built around a modular system of eight 4 x 4-meter units on the upper floor. This structure frames a continuous 360-degree deck that connects the residence to the surrounding woodland in North Karuizawa.
Interior Layout and Features
A pilotis supports the dining area, which opens directly toward an outdoor living space and fire pit. A light cantilevered staircase cuts through a double-height atrium to allow daylight and air to move freely between levels.
Architectural Inspiration and Style
The project reimagines traditional Sukiya architecture while incorporating modernist references and mid-century furniture. The design takes inspiration from Kenzo Tange's 1953 residence in Seijo to create a dialogue between traditional spatial thinking and modern structure.
