New booking system begins October

The Victorian government announced that visitors will need reservations starting on October 16. An entry fee will also commence in April of this year. Local residents and traditional owners are exempt from these charges.

Funds support infrastructure projects

Money collected from the fees will help fund visitor infrastructure and environmental projects. The new $126 million visitor centre aims to manage overcrowding at peak times. Minister Catherine King stated the redevelopment supports sustainable tourism along the coastline.

Local business owner reacts

Jake Higham works at a cafe in Portland and chats with tourists daily. He described the requirement for non-locals to pay as unfortunate. The government says the changes encourage more visitors to spend time in the region.
