Travelers reach remote Tsaatan reindeer herder camp in northern Mongolia
A group of visitors completed a multi-day journey by road and horse to stay with the Tsaatan reindeer herders in northern Mongolia.
Arrival at isolated forest camp
The party traveled for three days through deep taiga terrain using four-wheel-drive vehicles and horses. Hundreds of reindeer emerged from the forest as the group reached the final destination. Dozens of conical ortz structures with smoke rising from their roofs marked the settlement.
Life of the herding community
About 80 Dukha families live in this restricted border region near Russia. Unlike other pastoralists who move only a few times yearly, these groups traverse harsh landscapes six to 40 times annually. They search for fresh mountain moss and suitable weather conditions for their herds.
Guide joins local family
The guide Zaya Oldov is married into the Tsaatan community while being born in the United States. She led the travelers across northern Mongolia during golden hour light. The group ducked under pine branches and crossed streams to reach the camp.
