Hotel served as military detention site

The building now known as Hotel Flamboyan appears elegant from the street but held a dark history during Indonesia's occupation. Indonesian forces used the location to detain supporters of Fretilin and their families after arresting them in 1975. Maria de Fátima was among dozens of women taken to the compound following her brother's suspected support for the resistance movement.

Survivors describe torture and rape

Ms de Fátima stated that soldiers beat her, held her underwater, and then threw her to the ground inside the hotel. She reported that she and another woman were forced into a bathroom at gunpoint where their clothes were torn off. A group of Indonesian soldiers subsequently raped them while their faces were covered so they could not see the attackers.
