University of Illinois researchers store multiple photons on a chip

Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign have developed a new quantum chip capable of storing multiple photons simultaneously.

New platform enables light storage

The team created an integrated nanophotonic platform designed to hold light particles for longer periods. This development addresses the difficulty of pausing fragile quantum information while other operations catch up. The chip measures about one centimeter in size.

Technique uses specific materials

The system combines spectral hole burning with thin-film lithium niobate to achieve scalability. Professor Elizabeth Goldschmidt led the project which was published in Nano Letters. Graduate student Priyash Barya noted that this method offers unique potential for manufacturing.
