Surrey County Council planted over 800000 trees in five years
Surrey County Council reports that more than 800000 new trees were planted across the county between 2021 and 2026.

Planting numbers exceed initial goals
The authority reached a total of approximately 885000 trees, which is higher than the original target of 600000. In the current financial year alone, 116359 trees were added to the count. The council stated it remains broadly on track to meet its net zero targets by 2030.
Survival rates raise concerns
Elmbridge Borough Council passed a motion asking for an updated strategy that considers tree survival rates. Councillor Katerina Lusk noted that many trees planted in the borough died within a year due to lack of aftercare. She argued there is little point in celebrating planting numbers if significant numbers are dead shortly after.
Energy efficiency support provided
The report highlighted that supporting residents reduced energy bills and improved their homes. More than 1438 low-income households received improvements such as insulation, solar panels, and low-carbon heating systems. Carbon emissions for the council have been reduced by around 60 percent over the past five years.
