Study finds older adults prefer quiet green spaces near other people
Ph.D. candidate Anne Grave investigated the ideal living environment for residents aged 70 and older by gathering direct input from them.

Research focuses on aging population needs
Grave conducted forty in-depth interviews with older adults to understand their wishes for relaxing public areas. She used an iPad to take virtual walks through the neighborhoods shown by participants during these discussions. The study highlights that much less was previously known about how nature impacts the mental health of seniors compared to young people.
Tranquility and safety are key factors
Her findings indicate that relaxation happens where peace, nature, safety, and the presence of other individuals come together. Participants showed Grave their favorite spots online while discussing how these environments contributed to their well-being. Designers of public spaces can now use these insights to better meet the needs of older residents.
