Seoul National University team improves plastic feedstock synthesis with new reactor design
A research team at Seoul National University has developed a reactor design that controls local acidity to boost the efficiency of organic compound synthesis.
Controlling acidity near electrodes
Researchers identified a hidden variable determining reaction success in the immediate vicinity of electrodes. By controlling the local pH around the electrode, the team increased target-product selectivity from approximately 16 percent to 97 percent.
Synthesizing compounds without peroxide
The new method synthesizes lactones and epoxides without separately adding peroxide oxidants. These compounds serve as feedstocks for biodegradable plastics, polyurethanes, adhesives, coatings, and epoxy resins used in electronic materials.
Sustainable chemical process advances
Improving the synthesis of these widely used intermediates could contribute to safer and more sustainable chemical processes. The study examined compounds closely connected to materials used in everyday life.
