Researchers at the Institute of Education and Child Studies followed women and children in Dutch domestic violence shelters to assess recovery progress.

Scope of the shelter system
More than one million people aged 16 or older experience domestic violence in the Netherlands annually. Approximately 6,000 individuals seek refuge in these facilities each year according to 2023 figures. The population includes nearly 3,000 women, almost as many children, and around 140 men.
Research methodology and timeline
Willemien van den Dorpel and her colleagues monitored 52 families for a period of 13 weeks. The participants were women and their young children who were under the age of six. Van den Dorpel is scheduled to defend her dissertation on September 29, 2026.
