Mathematical model solves resource limits in Bloons Tower Defense game

Researcher Delorme developed mathematical strategies to solve optimization problems found in the video game Bloons Tower Defense.

Game mechanics mirror math problems

The game requires players to stop balloons from reaching a track end by placing towers strategically. These structures vary in cost, range, and attack power while occupying limited space on the route. Each round increases difficulty, meaning placement decisions affect both current effectiveness and future options.

Two new strategies developed

Delorme created two mathematical approaches to handle the complexity of multiple game rounds. The first strategy determines the best immediate move based on towers already placed. The second strategy looks further ahead by considering all rounds together for a complete solution.
