International team studies how culture shapes dance emotion perception
Scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics in Frankfurt am Main released study results showing cultural background influences dance interpretation.

Research team composition and focus
The project brought together experts in psychology, dance, computer science and history from institutions around the world. Researchers filmed a professional dancer performing movements that expressed various emotions to create a movement archive.
Study participants and methods
Five separate studies involved more than 500 participants with Iranian, English and Southeast Asian backgrounds. The team examined how people from different cultural backgrounds perceive the same performances using this video archive.
Findings on emotion interpretation
Results indicate that acculturation to a particular culture influences how viewers interpret emotions in dance. People do not directly read emotions from body movements but rely on their own cultural experiences.
