Epic Systems stores data center heat in Wisconsin ground for winter use

Epic Systems in Verona, Wisconsin, has drilled thousands of wells to store waste heat from its data center for later use.

Ground temperature stays stable year round

The ground a few hundred feet underground remains close to the local yearly average temperature throughout the seasons. This stability allows facilities to pull heat out in winter and store excess heat during summer months.

Epic drills thousands of deep wells

The health software company has spent two decades drilling roughly 6,100 wells between 300 and 800 feet deep. These wells now support heating and cooling for about 40 buildings on its campus.

Waste heat timing solves storage issues

Servers generate heat every hour of the year, which creates a mismatch with typical building heating needs that last only four months. Storing this energy in the ground bridges the gap between summer production and winter demand.
