Systemic delays persist for decades

Research published recently shows that protections under the Species at Risk Act are routinely delayed. This problem has existed for nearly twenty years despite federal timelines. Many species still await protected status after waiting much longer than the average.

Legal barriers remain in place

Listing a species requires two distinct stages before it receives full protection. First, an independent committee assesses the threats and recommends a listing. The federal minister then reviews this recommendation to finalize the status.
