Amelia Earhart search team arrives at Nikumaroro Island
A research group from the Archaeological Legacy Institute and Purdue University has reached Nikumaroro Island to inspect possible wreckage of Amelia Earhart.

Arrival on Monday
The team boarded their ship and traveled to the western side of the island. They plan to spend five days looking for the Taraia Object spotted in satellite images from 2020.
Environmental challenges
Giant coconut crabs emerge at night to hunt, forcing researchers to sleep on their vessel. Strong El Niño weather conditions also threaten to slow down the inspection work.
Historical context
This visit marks the first authorized trip to the site in seven years. The aviator vanished in 1937 while attempting a global flight with navigator Fred Noonan.
