Runners faced hyenas and elephants during Kenya ultra-marathon
Lily Canter participated in the five-day, 230km For Rangers Ultra race held across Kenyan wildlife conservancies.
Armed rangers monitored the course
Security teams were stationed approximately 300 metres apart along the running route. Additional lookouts were positioned on hilltops while a helicopter surveyed the path above. These measures allowed officials to move elephants and big cats away from participants when necessary.
Wildlife encounters occurred frequently
A photographer spotted a hyena chasing prey just 20 metres from the runners halfway up a hill. Such animal interactions were considered a unique part of the experience for everyone taking part. The event took place over five exhausting days in the Kenyan wilderness.
