Work changes cause exhaustion even when unnecessary tasks decrease

A study by Bielefeld University published in Work & Stress finds that daily work changes contribute to employee exhaustion ahead of World Mental Health Day on Oct 10.

Daily shifts affect workers

Researchers surveyed employees repeatedly to track how everyday work relates to their feelings. The data shows that reducing burdensome tasks does not always lower exhaustion levels. Perceived uncertainty about these changes plays an important role in the results.

Illegitimate tasks defined

The study defines illegitimate tasks as work employees perceive as unnecessary or unreasonable. Examples include duties that do not fit an employee actual role. These perceptions differ from the objective number of tasks assigned.
