South Dakota State University researchers create corn growth sensors
Researchers at South Dakota State University developed new sensors to monitor corn growth continuously starting in August 2022.

New laser technology for sensing
Mazhar Sher began developing the devices using laser-induced graphene when he joined the university. This material converts commercial polyimide into porous structures through a carbon dioxide laser process. The resulting sensors provide high electrical conductivity and a large surface area for data collection.
Graphene history and properties
Physicists Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov isolated single-layer graphene in 2004 at the University of Manchester. Their work on this material earned them the 2010 Nobel Prize in physics. Researchers previously demonstrated a scalable method for fabricating these structures in 2014.
