Researchers from University of Greifswald show enzymes can recycle PET plastic
Scientists at the University of Greifswald published new research in Nature journals showing how enzymes break down difficult plastics like PET.
Enzymes split plastic bonds selectively
Two teams working with Dr. Uwe T. Bornscheuer demonstrated that specific enzymes can split chemical bonds holding plastics together. This process occurs under mild conditions and targets the building blocks of polyethylene terephthalate used in bottles and textiles.
Recovered blocks enable new cycles
The individual chemical components recovered from the plastic can be used to manufacture new products. This approach addresses the environmental burden caused by the over 400 million metric tons of plastics produced annually.
