Oxford physicists observe Aharonov-Bohm effect using hybrid quantum computer
Physicists at the University of Oxford used a hybrid quantum computer to observe the Aharonov-Bohm effect in a new simulation setting.

Hybrid system simulates gauge fields
Researchers combined qubits and quantum oscillators to create the hybrid device. This setup allows them to model interactions between matter and gauge fields that are hard for classical computers. The paper describing this work has been published in Nature Physics.
Particle acquires phase without field
The experiment showed a particle gaining a measurable phase while traveling around a magnetic flux. This occurs even though the particle never passes through a region where the magnetic field is present. The result confirms predictions made by Yakir Aharonov and David Bohm in 1959.
