European river quality improving but pace misses 2030 targets
A study led by researchers at the Universitat Politècnica de València analyzed water data from 2015 to 2021 regarding European river conditions.
Pollution levels show mixed progress
Organic pollution decreased in fourteen of the eighteen countries studied during the analysis period. Phosphate concentrations fell in eleven of the sixteen nations where sufficient information was available. Despite these reductions, the overall rate of improvement is insufficient to reach the decade-end goals.
Only Slovenia meets full criteria
Seven countries are currently in a favorable position regarding river health indicators. Only Slovenia follows a trajectory fully compatible with the environmental targets set for 2030. Finland, Estonia, Ireland, Italy and Denmark received positive assessments but must maintain current policies.
Future trends remain uncertain
Positive assessments do not guarantee that sustainability levels will be sustained without stronger management. Researchers emphasize that knowing the current state of rivers is not enough for success. The pace of improvement must be checked against the specific targets required by 2030.
