Chemists at LIKAT in Rostock convert plastic waste into nylon precursors

Researchers at the Leibniz Institute for Catalysis in Rostock have developed a method to turn polyethylene waste into raw materials for nylon production.

Selective conversion of plastic waste

The team successfully converted polyethylene, which is the main component of plastic bags, into dicarboxylic acids. This chemical process serves as a precursor for making nylon without needing a catalyst. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions according to the scientists.

Goal of pilot plant scale

The researchers aim to increase selectivity and clarify reaction mechanisms before moving to a pilot plant. Their goal is to produce nylon on a large scale from plastic waste instead of petroleum. This approach would benefit the environment by reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
