Elon Musk announced on Friday that Tesla will reduce Cybertruck output at its Austin plant in mid-2027 to prioritize the Cybercab robotaxi.

Production shift for new model

The company plans to use the available factory space for increased assembly of the two-seater Cybercab. Musk stated this change aims to support expanded robotaxi operations across multiple cities. He did not confirm whether manufacturing will move to a different location or end completely.

Sales performance and history

Deliveries began in late 2023 after several long delays complicated the build process. Total sales remain below the initial projection of 250,000 units per year. The vehicle faces regulatory hurdles in many regions due to its specific design features.

Focus on robotics strategy

This decision follows earlier moves to discontinue the Model S and Model X for robot development. Tesla is shifting resources toward artificial intelligence and autonomous driving fleets rather than traditional car models. The Austin facility remains the only known site equipped to build the specialized truck components.
