New safety rating released

Common Sense Media labeled the teen-focused chatbot as an unacceptable risk. The nonprofit group provides age-based ratings and reviews of media and technology for families. This assessment arrives after concerns regarding user engagement during mental health crises.

Engagement design flaws found

A new study found that the chatbot's design encourages engagement even in crisis situations. Researchers noted that while general relationship warnings were present, the tool failed to recognize harms related to unhealthy relationships with itself. Some protections like refusing sexual roleplay worked but other commitments failed to deliver.

Marketing concerns raised

The researchers wrote that OpenAI should not market this product to parents. They also stated that children should not use an unsafe product. The report suggests the engagement cues are pervasive even when user safety is at risk.
