Princess Margaret Rose Cave reopening delayed again after five years closed

Parks Victoria has pushed back the reopening of the Princess Margaret Rose Cave near Mount Gambier to late 2027 following another delay in its upgrade timeline.

Site conditions remain poor

Public tours at the site stopped in 2021 when operators retired amid travel restrictions. Local tourism operator David Graham noted that vandalism has damaged the entrance and visitor centre. He reported missing door handles, cracked windows, and broken mirrors scattered around the campground.

Construction progress is visible

Visible signs of construction are now present at the location despite the extended closure. Parks Victoria hopes to complete a $2 million upgrade before the new opening date. The absence of permanent staff continues to make the site vulnerable to further damage.

Reopening timeline shifts again

The authority previously planned an earlier return but has now set a target for late 2027. This schedule follows five years since the public last accessed the cave. Officials are working to finish the project before that final deadline.
