Scientists find unknown baby right whale off Canada
Researchers identified an unidentified baby North Atlantic right whale off Anticosti Island in Quebec during September surveys.

Rare sighting confirmed by experts
Scientists with the New England Aquarium analyzed photos and data to determine the animal was a calf born months ago. The discovery occurred while researchers studied rare sea mammals near Anticosti Island in Quebec.
Population numbers reach new high
This finding brings the total baby right whales from the current birthing season to 24. That count represents the most productive year for the species since 2009 and ranks as the fourth-highest on record.
Calf seen with known mother
The whale was observed alongside its mother, a 38-year-old individual researchers call Silt. Global populations of these animals number only about 380 and have declined since 2010.
