OpenAI releases hundreds of AI-generated mathematical manuscripts to public repository

OpenAI posted over 700 artificial-intelligence generated mathematical papers on an online public site in early October.

Community reaction ranges from hope to fear

The mathematics community has expressed mixed feelings about this release. Some researchers feel their lifelong work might now seem meaningless while others worry about the impact on young colleagues entering the field during this period of flux. Anger is also widespread regarding how the company chose to announce these discoveries.

Leiden Declaration calls for human verification

Authors of the Leiden Declaration published in June argued that all mathematical arguments must be independently verifiable by a human author. This group did not oppose using artificial intelligence but instead proposed practical safeguards like clear citation policies and precise disclosures on how the technology is used.

OpenAI has not agreed to new rules

While some artificial-intelligence companies have agreed to follow the declaration, OpenAI has declined to do so. Mathematicians are currently developing their own rules for using AI in proofs and hope other fields will eventually adopt similar standards.
