National Taiwan University researchers create ultralight aerogels using vapor sublimation

Researchers at National Taiwan University have developed a new vapor-based method to produce ultralight aerogels without conventional liquid chemistry.

New fabrication process details

The team introduced the world's first purely gaseous-born aerogel fabrication platform. This technique uses vapor sublimation and deposition polymerization to create materials directly from solid solutions under low-pressure conditions.

Environmental benefits of method

The solvent-free approach is environmentally friendly and generates no harmful byproducts. It replaces complex drying processes required in traditional liquid-based sol-gel chemistry.

Material performance metrics

The resulting aerogels achieve densities as low as 0.004 g/cm³ with porosities between 90% and 99%. These materials also maintain strong mechanical stability while offering surface areas exceeding 1,300 m²/g.
