Hubble Space Telescope captures edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 1827
NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has imaged the intermediate spiral galaxy NGC 1827 located in the constellation Columba as part of a larger survey.
Survey targets satellite galaxies
The telescope captured this image while observing 260 satellite galaxies around 22 Milky Way-like host systems. Observers have already examined 111 of these objects and plan to view the remaining ones over future orbits.
Image reveals star formation zones
Bright blue regions along the disk indicate areas where new stars are likely forming. Dark dust lanes interrupt these bright sections within the galaxy's structure.
Data refines cosmological models
Low-mass galaxies like NGC 1827 allow scientists to test predictions of cosmological models on small scales. The gathered data helps researchers characterize properties of these systems and refine existing theories.
