Artist Katherine Hubbard photographs her mother with dementia in Philadelphia apartment
Photographer Katherine Hubbard documented five years of caring for her mother Antonette Berger in a Germantown Philadelphia apartment after the elder woman was diagnosed with LATE.
Diagnosis and caregiving role
Hubbard noticed changes in her mother during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Berger lived alone until restrictions lifted, at which point Hubbard moved to stay with her. The mother was eventually diagnosed with LATE, a condition causing slower decline than Alzheimer's.
Photography project setup
Hubbard assumed the role of caretaker and decided to photograph her housebound mother and environment. She set up two vintage Polaroid cameras and other equipment inside the Germantown apartment. The artist kept the gear in place for five years without removing it.
Published work details
The resulting images form a series called The Great Room which was published as a book. The book is titled One Fifty One, named after the house street number. Photographs and installations based on the apartment are included in a solo exhibition at Studio Voltair.
