Tokyo suburban tourism practitioners assess overtourism risks in new study
A Keio University professor interviewed 13 local experts in September 2026 to examine how suburban Tokyo areas perceive the threat of overtourism.

Study examines suburban tourism pressures
Researchers found that less-visited suburban areas face different challenges than busy city centers. While central districts struggle with large crowds, these outer regions often worry about attracting enough visitors. The study questions whether growing tourism will eventually create new pressures for places that currently receive few guests.
Practitioner experiences drive research
Sho Shimoyamada from Keio University published findings in the International Journal of Tourism Cities on Sept. 29, 2026. His interest began after a late-night disturbance caused by tourists at a neighboring house in central Tokyo in 2017. At that time overtourism was not widely recognized in Japan but the incident changed his perspective.
