Bali wellness tourism expands from spiritual retreats to medical procedures
Bali has evolved into a global wellbeing destination offering everything from traditional healing to modern medical treatments.

Traditional practices attract early visitors
Before the book Eat, Pray, Love was published in 2006, the island already hosted yoga and meditation sessions. Travelers sought out herbal treatments inspired by centuries-old rituals of Balinese royalty. Local energy healers known as balian drew intrepid pre-smartphone era travelers to the region.
Modern facilities now dominate the scene
Hotel spas have added injectables, lasers and reformer Pilates to their offerings since 2014. These advanced treatments are now easier to find than traditional balian healers in some areas. The shift occurred as retreats expanded from Ayurvedic options to silent meditation centers.
Tourism growth accelerated after lockdown
The wellness explosion became unmissable once Bali ended its COVID lockdown in 2022. Visitors now practice chaturanga dandasana at The Yoga Barn and visit the Tirta Empul water temple. Massage services remain popular with prices around six dollars per session.
