CineGouna Funding awards over $350,000 to Arab film projects at El Gouna festival
The industry arm of Egypt's El Gouna Film Festival awarded funding and services to regional filmmakers during its ninth edition running through October 23.

New strand supports local Egyptian projects
High numbers of Egyptian submissions led organizers to create a new category called Egyptian Voices. This specific strand provides four extra projects with training in pitching and packaging. The initiative aims to help local creators navigate the current funding landscape.
Cash prizes go to sixteen winners
CineGouna Funding distributed more than $350,000 in cash and services to the selected applicants. Forty distinct awards were given out among the nineteen participating projects from the region. Syrian filmmaker Rama Abdy received support for her documentary about women building a refuge.
Regional gaps hinder independent cinema growth
Ahmed Shawky noted that many countries lack national film funds and stable co-production treaties. He also pointed to the volatility of available resources which leaves creators uncertain about support. Egypt currently focuses its commission on attracting foreign productions instead of financing local films.
