Stanford researchers develop AI model for spacecraft docking simulations
Researchers at Stanford posted a new paper to the arXiv preprint server describing an AI system called Out-of-this-World-Model that performs mental simulations to help spacecraft dock with the International Space Station.

Traditional docking methods face limits
Engineers have traditionally used hard-coded physics equations and human pilots to correct course during docking maneuvers. Navigating low Earth orbit requires managing high speeds without air friction to slow the vehicle down naturally.
New AI performs mental simulations
The Out-of-this-World-Model allows an artificial intelligence to run a series of mental simulations before executing a docking sequence. This approach aims to fundamentally change how future spacecraft interact with one another in orbit.
Complex orbital mechanics explained
Docking is compared to parallel parking on a highway traveling at 28,000 kilometers per hour while avoiding collisions. A successful hit on the station would endanger everyone aboard and create debris that could harm satellites or people on the ground.
