Silver nanoparticles improve carbon monoxide production from recycled carbon dioxide

An international team led by HZB chemist Prashanth Menezes published findings on silver nanoparticle catalysts in the journal Advanced Functional Materials.

Optimal particle size and density

The researchers found that loosely distributed nanoparticles with diameters of around 10 nm produced the best yield. Electrolysis reduces carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide, which serves as a raw material for chemical products like fuels.

Simultaneous production of multiple gases

Adding a specific chemical reaction at the anode improves economic efficiency by creating formic acid and hydrogen alongside carbon monoxide. This process allows one device to generate all three substances at the same time.

Pathway to green cooking fuel

Teams from HZB collaborate with partners in South Africa within the GreenQUEST project to develop affordable sustainable fuel. The generated carbon monoxide and hydrogen form syngas, which converts into green-LFG primarily comprising propane and butane.
